Vavla & around
The village, and what surrounds it
A few dozen residents, one restaurant, and birdsong from first light. Everything else is hills, almond and olive terraces, and sky.
The village itself
Small enough to learn by heart
Vavla sits in the foothills that climb from the Larnaca plain towards Troodos. It is a preserved village: the lanes are stone, the houses are stone, and the newer ones have been rebuilt to look like the older ones.
There is no traffic to speak of. Mornings start with birdsong; in the evening you will hear goat bells on the far slope and not a great deal else. It is the sort of place where a walk before dinner turns into a conversation with whoever is sitting outside their door.
The village church is Panagia tis Agapis, Our Lady of Love, the only church in Cyprus to carry that name. Vavla also has its own restaurant, so on the nights nobody feels like cooking, dinner is a short walk away.

Kato Drys

Walking the hills
From the doorTracks leave the village straight into olive terraces, carob groves and dry riverbeds. Best from October through May, when the hills turn green.
-

When to come
The year in the hills
-
Spring
March – May
The almond trees around the village flower white, wildflowers cover the terraces and everything turns green. Long walking days, cool evenings, and the best light of the year.
-
Summer
June – August
Hot and dry, but thick stone walls stay cool and the courtyard holds shade all afternoon. Evenings are spent outside, always.
-
Autumn
September – November
Warm days, harvest in the olive groves, and a sea still swimmable into November. Our favourite season for retreats.
-
Winter
December – February
Quiet and clear, with fires lit indoors. Snow on Troodos is an hour and a half away.
